I’m a procurement manager for a mid-size industrial services company. I’ve managed our PPE budget ($180,000+ annually) for about 6 years, negotiated with 30+ vendors, and documented every invoice in our cost tracking system. Here’s what I’ve learned about when Dunlop boots are actually the smartest option, and when you should probably pass.
Why I keep ordering Dunlop rubber boots (and hazmat boots specifically)

Honestly, I’m not sure why some competitors’ insulated boots fail faster. My best guess is it comes down to the way Dunlop bonds the insulation layer during molding, but I haven’t verified that. If someone has insight, I’d love to hear it.

When I first started, I made the mistake of comparing upfront prices. For example, are nitrile gloves heat resistant? Not really. They resist some heat but not direct flame or continuous high temps. Dunlop’s hazmat boots have similar limitations. Their chemical resistance is excellent, but they aren’t designed for thermal hazards. If your crew needs both chemical and heat protection, you’ll want a different boot or an add-on.
We didn’t have a formal approval chain for specialty boot requests. Cost us when a crew member ordered a Hazmax pair for a high-heat task and the sole delaminated. Should have created a usage matrix earlier.
When Dunlop rubber boots might not be for you
- You need all-day standing comfort on concrete. Dunlop’s Vulcanized boots have a firmer sole. Great for mud. Less great for 10-hour shifts on solid floor. Consider their Air Plus series if your crew stands more than walks.
- Your job site has extreme slip hazards. Dunlop has decent slip resistance, but for grease or oil-covered floors, look for boots with specific SRC ratings or consider a different brand with an aggressive tread.
- You want a lightweight boot. Rubber is heavy. Dunlop’s steel-toe models weigh around 3 pounds per pair. If you’re climbing ladders or crawling, consider composite-toe or alloy-toe alternatives.
This worked for us, but our situation was specific: moderate volume, regular rotation, predictable hazards. Your mileage may vary if you have seasonal demand spikes or extreme conditions I’m not aware of.
The bottom line for procurement managers
Dunlop boots are a strong choice when: (1) waterproofing is non-negotiable, (2) you need certified chemical resistance, or (3) your crew works in mixed-temperature environments. They’re a weaker choice for dry, static, or high-comfort scenarios.
If I had to summarize 6 years of data: Dunlop rubber boots saved us money over 2-year cycles in wet/hazardous conditions, but cost more in dry environments where a lighter boot would do.
